Summer at the Institute with Horizon académique

The Geneva Graduate Institute is a partner of the Horizon académique programme, which aims to enable refugees and other people arriving in Switzerland to resume studies at one of the universities in the canton of Geneva: the University of Geneva (UNIGE), the University of Applied Sciences (HES-SO), or the Geneva Graduate Institute. Hermella Gebru, a participant in the Horizon académique programme, recently participated in the Institute’s Summer Programme and discusses her experience.

When did you join the Horizon académique programme and what are you studying?

Horizon académique is an important academic initiative that is playing a significant role in supporting my academic development and integration. My application to Horizon académique was accepted in December 2024, and I began my courses in February 2025. I am currently undertaking preparatory French courses at Horizon académique, which will enable me to successfully pursue a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in higher education. Afterward, I plan to continue my studies here in Geneva.

How did you learn about the Institute's Summer programme and what appealed to you about the programme?

I learned about it through an email sent by Horizon académique to its participants, introducing the summer school offered by the institute. That’s how I came to apply for the first two modules: “Humanitarianism: Its History and Politics” and “Economic Globalisation and Fragmentation”.

I have gained professional experience in international affairs, particularly in the field of global health. This exposure has given me valuable insight into how macro level initiatives can significantly impact individuals and communities at the micro level. It deepened my interest in sustainable global development and instilled in me a desire  to pursue a meaningful career within international organisations.

With this in mind, I saw the summer course as an opportunity to expand my understanding of international affairs. I was particularly interested in learning how humanitarian organisations operate and in exploring the dynamics of the global economy and the challenges it currently faces. Gaining this knowledge is essential for me, as I aspire to contribute in an international context.

The programme was the right choice to satisfy both my academic curiosity and my professional ambitions. It aligns well with my background, as I hold a degree in Social Work, with a focus on community and social development. This academic foundation introduced me to a wide range of relevant topics, and I was eager to broaden my perspective from local to global issues.

What did you enjoy about the Summer Programme experience?

The topics covered in the modules addressed urgent and contemporary global issues that I could relate to.  Throughout the programme, I felt fortunate to learn from highly accomplished academics and subject-matter experts. I was impressed not only by their depth of expertise but also by their humility. The insights they shared left a strong impression on me, and I remained fully engaged throughout the sessions.

As part of the programme, I also had the chance to visit the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Trade Organization  (WTO). These visits allowed me to better understand the missions and operations of ICRC and WTO. Standing inside the headquarters of two major international humanitarian and trade organisations, places where critical global decisions have been made, was truly uplifting.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. Engaging with renowned scholars, leading experts, as well as a diverse and bright peer group broadened my perspective. It has also inspired me to keep learning, deepen my expertise, and work toward making a meaningful impact.

What are your areas of interest in the field of International Affairs?

Global and societal challenges are interconnected and require holistic, cross-cutting approaches. This is why I have always been drawn to a wide range of international Affairs. However, I also recognize the importance of narrowing my focus. Therefore, I am motivated to study global health and sustainability and aim to contribute to these areas moving forward. If I have the privilege, I would be keen to pursue a master’s degree at Geneva Graduate Institute one day.
