2012 Summer Programme Participants

Last week the Institute’s Summer Programme on International Affairs and Multilateral Governance kicked off. It will be followed by the Programme on the WTO, International Trade and Development beginning on 2 July.

The programmes have a strong focus on international institutions. In addition to Graduate Institute faculty members, lecturers include more than 30 accomplished practitioners from international and non-governmental organisations. Participants go on numerous visits to international organisations, taking advantage of the Institute’s location in Geneva, a city of global governance.

As part of the programme on International Affairs and Multilateral Governance, several participants will complete internships at international organisations. This year, the Programme on WTO, International Trade and Development has concluded a new partnership with some members of the Geneva Trade Bar Association, which will provide additional private sector expertise on World Trade Organization law. The Deputy-Director of the WTO, Rufus Yerxa will give a private lecture during the programme.

Four public conferences are organised as part of the programmes. Topics this year include: Waste as a valuable resource, the impact of the Arab Spring on asylum and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa, urban resilience in Kigali, Rwanda, and the WTO Doha trade talks and possible alternatives.

The more than 100 participants come from all around the world and include both students and professionals. Many of them come from the programmes’ academic partners: Georgetown University, University of Southern California and Georgia University in the United States.

The Institute also holds a Winter Programme on the United Nations and Global Challenges.
