Carlos Lopes, born in 1960 in Canchungo, Guinea-Bissau, is a distinguished figure in African and international development. His academic journey laid the foundation for his extensive teaching roles, spanning respected institutions such as Sciences Po in Paris, the University of Cape Town, and many other universities in Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
During his tenure as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (2012-2016), he prioritised sustainable economic policies and regional integration, advocating for transformative projects such as the African Continental Free Trade Area and the move towards green energy across the continent. His reputation as a thought leader in governance, economic planning, and capacity building was recognised by his inclusion 26 times in the list of most influential Africans of various pan-African magazines.
