PhD Thesis
Title: Bridging the Epistemological Gaps — Projection in International Relations Scholarship and Practice (Provisional title)
PhD Supervisor: Annabelle Littoz-Monnet
Expected completion date: 2026
My research is about future-oriented knowledge, such as forecasting and scenario-based foresight, in the practice and scholarship of International Relations (IR). It answers questions related to the epistemological foundations of this 'projective' knowledge. (For instance, which methodological traditions dominate, and how do they legitimate themselves as superior? How are uncertainties and probabilities communicated? How does IR theory impact imagination of the future, and which theories are privileged?) It also aims to develop best practices for scholars and real-life practitioners alike. (For example, when are scenario-based approaches versus forecasts in probabilistic terms more appropriate? How is the effect of unconscious biases best minimized?)
