Robert Kolb, born on March 11, 1967, in Rome, is a reputed figure in public international law, known for his extensive writings and practical activities. 

Robert Kolb’s career has been marked by significant roles at influential institutions. He began his journey in the field by working as a legal advisor for the International Committee of the Red Cross from 1998 to 1999, where he contributed to the organisation’s mission of upholding humanitarian law during armed conflicts. From 1999 to 2003, he served as Secretary of the Secretary General of the Institute of International Law, a prestigious organisation dedicated to advancing international legal principles. Additionally, he was an active member of the governing board of the Centre for International Humanitarian Law, which later became the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.

Robert Kolb’s expertise extends across many areas of international law, ranging from the law of treaties to United Nations law, from law of armed conflict to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). His academic appointments include lecturer positions at the Geneva Graduate Institute and the University of Geneva. Over the years, he has also held teaching positions at the University of Bern, the University of Neuchâtel, and the Catholic University of Milan, shaping the next generation of legal professionals and scholars.

In 2011, Robert Kolb’s expertise was recognised on the world stage when he represented Germany as Legal Counsel in a landmark case against Italy before the ICJ regarding state immunity. This case underscored his deep understanding of complex international legal principles and his ability to navigate high-stakes international disputes.
