Climate Change, Food Insecurity and Conflict

This report explores climate change as a driver of human insecurity and its intersection with food insecurity and violent conflict, particularly in fragile states. Drawing on case studies from Somalia, Burkina Faso, and Haiti, it shows how climate change acts as a "threat multiplier," exacerbating existing structural weaknesses like poor governance and institutional instability. As climate shocks devastate food systems, they trigger displacement and empower non-state armed groups that exploit resource scarcity for power and control. The report emphasizes the urgent need for integrated, context-specific policy responses that center food systems, aiming to prevent conflict and strengthen resilience in line with the UN’s prevention agenda.
