Summary:
This project combines theory and empirical analysis to answer the question: are cities in developing countries reaching their full potential for labour market connectivity in exporting sectors? The research hypothesises that distance-dependent informational frictions and highly localised urban labour markets are important barriers to the distribution of benefits from Bangladesh's participation in garment global value chains (GVCs). By quantifying this barrier, the research identifies policy instruments best suited to creating functional urban labour markets that benefit from international trade.
