Port Utilization and Capacity Development Opportunities: Mapping Usage and Analyzing Capacity Across Europe's River Ports for United Waterways

This project investigates port utilization patterns across 83 ports of interest along European waterways to identify locations with the strongest strategic potential for United Waterways. The project addresses a critical gap in empirical, port-level utilization data across European inland waterway networks and finds that the average utilization across all 83 ports stands at 16.6%, with only 12-18% of ports operating above the 40% utilization threshold, and approximately one third recording zero utilization across all three observation weeks. Using regression analysis, the report hypothesizes the most influential variables that cause these utilization rates.
