Both of the Geneva Graduate Institute's predecessors — the Graduate Institute of International Studies and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies — tried to play a role in the field of diplomat training for countries which had recently achieved formal independence. The aim was to contribute to the creation of an international diplomatic elite that shared the same values and practices.
