Market mechanisms, including financial incentives, are playing a greater role than in the past in both development aid and conservation, bringing an unprecedented degree of financialisation to both sectors. Yet, as part of the same growth-driven system that underpins the ecological crisis, such market-based instruments may prove unable to address its underlying causes.
