Liam Fox: If we are to live in security, the world needs open trade

On 21 June, UK Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox highlighted the critical importance of free trade at an event organised by the Institute’s Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI).

“We need those who shape the global debate to actually believe in free trade and what it can produce for our citizens”, said Dr Fox. “Trade has been the means by which we’ve taken a billion people out of abject poverty in a generation. Trade is not an end in itself; it is a means of spreading prosperity. That prosperity underpins social cohesion, which in turn underpins political stability, the building block for our collective security.”

“We need open trading policies that enable the maximum number of people around the world to benefit from that prosperity, if we’re all to live in security in future.”

Dr Fox discussed the current threats to free trade with WIPO Director General Francis Gurry, ITC Executive Director Arancha Gonzalez and CTEI Executive Director Theresa Carpenter, in an event organised with the United Kingdom's Department for International Trade and its Mission to the WTO.
