With a global order once underpinned by extensive US–China economic ties and a shared commitment to engagement now under serious strain, the world community faces threats not only to its stability, but also to its long‑term viability. While we must remain realistic about the challenges ahead, we cannot be passive bystanders in diplomacy, business, or academia, nor can we wait for the United States to reverse course. China and Europe have key roles to play, and the extent to which they come to understand each other and work together productively will be crucial on all fronts. How can Chinese and Europeans, at all levels of interaction, shape a relationship that contributes to solutions rather than to further fractures?

This lecture will be introduced by Marie-Laure Salles, Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute, and moderated by Achim Wennmann, Nagulendran Chair in Peace Mediation and Professor of Practice, Geneva Graduate Institute.

Ronnie C. Chan is a Hong Kong businessman and philanthropist, and Honorary Chair of Hang Lung Properties, one of the leading real estate groups in Hong Kong and mainland China. He is also Chair Emeritus of Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center. Co-founder of the diversified investment group Morningside, focusing on private equity and venture capital across North America, Asia, and Europe, he is widely recognised for his commitment to education, philanthropy, and the preservation of Chinese cultural heritage, as well as for his role in fostering dialogue between China and the West.
