What does it take to become a deminer in an active conflict zone and what does that tell us about humanitarianism itself? Join the Human Rights, Conflict, and Peace (HRCP) student initiative and Fondation Suisse de Déminage (FSD) for a film screening and panel discussion on mine action, humanitarian training, and the realities of operating in Ukraine.
The evening opens with the documentary Step by Step: Becoming Deminers by Quentin Curzon, which follows Serhii and Nadiia — new recruits of an FSD demining team in Ukraine — as they train for one of the most dangerous and necessary jobs in the world. The film offers a rare, human portrait of mine action not as an abstract process, but as a lived experience.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with practitioners and experts, including FSD’s Head of Operations, exploring how organisations train humanitarians in active conflict environments, how they manage risk and protect their staff, and what mine action on the ground in Ukraine actually looks like.
