Commercial and Investment Arbitration: How Different are they Today?

Mr Böckstiegel has practised as an independent arbitrator for 30 years, counselling clients and acting as mediator, arbitrator and as the president of the arbitration tribunal in many national and international arbitrations of the ICC, ICSID, LCIA, CAFTA, NAFTA, ECT, DIS, SCC, the AAA, UNCITRAL, between states, and others.

Mr Böckstiegel is chairman of the board of the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS). In his early career, he was a partner at a law firm in Düsseldorf. Since 1975, he has held the chair for international business law and was director of the Institute of Air and Space Law. He is professor emeritus of the Law Faculty of the University of Cologne. He has lectured in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and the US.

Other notable past positions include: president of the International Law Association (ILA) between 2004 and 2006; president of the German Association for International Law between 1993 and 2006; patron of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) between 2008 and 2010; president of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) between 1993 and 1997; panel chairman of the United Nations Compensation Commission between 1994 and 1996; and president of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal at The Hague between 1984 and 1988; chair 'Arbitration of the Century', IBA Conference Amsterdam 2000.

Mr Böckstiegel is the author of 12 books, more than 300 articles and has edited 33 books. In 2001 he was honoured by two libri amicorum: the Law of International Business and Dispute Settlement in the 21st Century, Liber Amicorum Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel, Cologne 2001, and Air and Space Law in the 21st Century, Liber Amicorum Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel, Cologne 2001.
