In Midwives, amid an environment of ever-increasing chaos and violence against the Muslim Rohingya population in Myanmar, two midwives, one Buddhist and one Muslim, work side by side in a makeshift clinic in western Myanmar, providing medical services to the Rohingya of Rakhine State.

This documentary film directed by Hnin Ei Hlaing, which won the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Vérité Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival (2022, in Burmese with English subtitles), will be followed by a panel discussion with: 

  • Maung Sawyeddollah, 2023 Young Activists Summit Laureate and Founder, Rohingya Student Network (live from Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh)

  • Sarah Noble, Director of External Relations, The New Humanitarian (moderator)

  • Declan O’Brien, Head, Elections and Democracy, Kofi Annan Foundation

  • Md Mahbubur Rahman, Senior Fellow in Residence at the Global Migration Centre, Geneva Graduate Institute

The screening is organised in partnership with the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), The New Humanitarian, and the Young Activists Summit taking place on 16 November 2023.
