The Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews opened just three years ago, and has already attracted more than a million visitors and earned the most important European museum awards. The museum stands in a site of the Holocaust, but it is called a “museum of life”. It is unique as a cultural institution established by a public-private partnership and enjoying wide political support. Its director, Prof. Dariusz Stola, will present its founding ideas, the history of its emergence and its diverse activities.

Dariusz Stola, the Polin Museum director, is a historian, and professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has published ten books and many articles on the history of Polish-Jewish relations, the communist regime in Poland and on international migrations in the 20th century, including: Nadzieja i zagłada (1995); Kampania antysyjonistyczna w Polsce 1967-1968 (2000); Patterns of Migration in Central Europe (2001, with C. Wallace); Kraj bez wyjścia? Migracje z Polski 1948-1989 (2010).

Organised as part of the Institute's cooperation programme with the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI).
