The rising number of labour strikes and protests in Chinese factories has sparked heated debate on labour conditions and workers' relationship with the Chinese state. Some believe factory workers are mostly concerned with self-improvement, lacking the political consciousness needed to push for social change. Others argue that factory workers are the new working class, armed with a strong class identity. This lunch briefing challenges conventional wisdom on Chinese factory workers, presenting a new way to think about workers' lives, as well as their view of society.
