In this session, we assess how online-trade platforms can help emerging economies to export more with a case study on AliExpress, AliBaba’s export-oriented platform introduced in 2010. As AliExpress allows Chinese sellers and non-Chinese consumers only, all visitors on AliExpress.com in countries outside of China are buyers. We thus exploit the cross-country differences in the share of AliExpress visitors to predict patterns in Chinese gross exports.
