Archives and Digitization in a World Turning Inward

Geneva, 12 December 2025 - The Centre for Digital Humanities and Multilateralism (CDHM ) participated in the workshop “Archives and Digitization in a World Turning Inward: Countering Growing Authoritarianism with International History and Digital Humanities” organized by the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH).

The workshop, organized by Dr. Myriam Piguet (C2DH), brought together historians of internationalism, digital historians, and practitioners from international organisations. It explored the opportunities opened by new digital tools – like AI – and digitization both for historical inquiry and in the field of international relations. It also focused on how digital humanities can identify and address current research challenges.

Pierre-Etienne Bourneuf, Head of Strategic Partnership at the CDHM, was invited as keynote speaker. He presented the Centre, provided an overview on some of its ongoing projects, and talked about the opportunities and challenges involved in digital humanities projects using archival materials from international organisations.

The first part of the workshop examined the challenges in using AI for research, digital humanities projects, and the development of interdisciplinary knowledge with digital research infrastructures.

The second part of the workshop explored how to study marginalized computing history, how technology impacts multilateral diplomacy, and addressed the relationship between social media and academics.

The workshop ended with a keynote presentation by Dieter Schlenker, Director Historical Archives of the European Union, on the digital strategy for European Union historical archives.

This event provided a valuable opportunity for participants to share experiences, present projects, and engage in substantive discussions. It was an opportunity for the CDHM to present its projects and expand its research network. We hope that it can lead to collaborative projects in the future.
