Back to School for Global Professionals Joining Executive Master Programmes

The first week of October marked the "back to school" season for dozens of mid-career professionals, as two of the Executive Master programmes at the Institute launched their 2014-15 programmes, welcoming participants to the opening modules from across Europe and the Americas, Africa and the Asia Pacific.

For the Executive Master in International Negotiation and Policy-Making (INP), in the photo featured above, participants include diplomats, leaders from the International Organisations in Geneva and managers from the private sector.  The multi-stakeholder approach which is a longstanding hallmark of the programme allows participants to engage, debate and cross-train with peers from organisations beyond their own sector, giving exposure and perspectives where their regular work environments do not provide.

Sessions in the INP included substantive training on the hot issues of the international agenda (from Trade to Health and Environment), debates on challenges for global governance and field visits in Geneva.  For this module, the location of Executive Education classes gave the participants quick access to the World Trade Organization (adjacent to Villa Barton in the park), where they attended high-level, cross-sector dialogues at the WTO's annual Public Forum.  The INP programme takes advantage of the Institute's location in Geneva by regularly sourcing guest speakers and providing engagements with various actors and organisations across International Geneva.

Concurrently, the Executive Master in International Oil and Gas Leadership (IOG) brought together participants from as far as Mexico, Brazil, the US, Ghana, India and Australia for Module #1 of the four module series (see photo, below).  Participants include public officials and private-sector employees who engage various actors in the energy sector and who aspire to lead the sustainable growth and development of these critical natural resources.  As with the Executive Maser INP, the faculty design the IOG programme for a cross-sector, multi-stakeholder perspective, including substantive sessions as well as practical sessions.

This first IOG module included a series of guest professors and lecturers, a Harvard simulation and guest speakers, a well as a field study visit to the Port of Antwerp--where participants had a first-hand view of the management of downstream operations and management, and the environmental aspects of governance in protecting one of Europe's most vital ports.
