PhD Thesis

Title: Strolling the Streets of International Geneva: A Study of Social and Regulatory Interactions of Cities with International Organisations

PhD Supervisor: Janne Nijman

Expected completion date: 2025

The thesis pursues two main lines of inquiry. First, it studies cities as entities with a will and capacity to engage with the UN system and the making of international law. Second, it traces and conceptualises how international law is utilised in and shaped by different governance processes which fall beyond the traditional disciplinary frames and language. The project connects the two lines of enquiry and offers a unique study of the many ways cities contribute to the process of making of international law and, in doing so, how the process of making of global norms is affected by the different modes of governance utilised by cities and the UN ecosystem in their engagements.
