The conundrum of race and affirmative action in higher education

Affirmative action policies for university entrance vary greatly between countries. In Brazil, for example, potential beneficiaries are required to self-identify in terms of race in order to benefit from explicit, race-based quotas. In France, on the other hand, the question of race remains politically taboo, requiring universities to experiment with alternative methods to reduce discrimination and increase student diversity.
