Institute students reveal opportunities for cutting food waste

Over two million tons of food are thrown away each year in Switzerland alone, but what can we do about it? Students from the Graduate Institute’s Environmental Committee ran a workshop on saving food at home and in the workplace at the recent International Climate Show in Geneva, which showcases innovative solutions for protecting the climate and reducing carbon emissions.

Gianluca Gygax (MIA), Elodie Feijoo (MDEV) and Kira Mullally (MIA) discussed the results of the “Save Food” project at the Graduate Institute, an initiative organised by the Environmental Committee and Novae which aims to reduce the amount of food being thrown away by making it more convenient to save it than to waste it.

“Every Friday at 6pm, the Environmental Committee collects the cafeteria left-overs and distributes them for free to students at the Edgar and Daniele de Picciotto Student House common room”, the students told us. “While the problems leading to food waste are known, more needs to be done to reduce the amount of food thrown away. We encouraged workshop participants to initiate their own small food saving project through presenting the challenges and obstacles that can arise, and sharing best practices from our own experience.”
