In March 2010, Caroline Moser and Dennis Rodgers of the University of Manchester received funding from the ESRC/DFID Joint Scheme for Research on International Development (Poverty Alleviation) for a project investigating the tipping point of urban conflict. The project sought to understand the nature of both quantitative and qualitative tipping points, identifying how they can best be measured and the processes that generate them in order to determine the range of potential means to prevent urban conflict from tipping over into violence.
The 24-month project, administered by the University of Manchester and in collaboration with the CCDP, Corporación SUR (Chile), Eco-Build Africa (Kenya) and the Institute for Human Development (India), focused on four cities: Dili, Nairobi, Patna and Santiago.
The CCDP took the lead on the Dili study and convened an international conference in Geneva to disseminate results on 12 June 2012. The conference featured Caroline Moser (University of Manchester), Magdalena Sepulveda (United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights), Oliver Bangerter (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland), John de Boer (International Development Research Centre) and Duncan Green (Oxfam Great Britain).
