WTO Dispute Settlement at the Crossroads

The CTEI organized a panel discussion last week  titled WTO Dispute Settlement at the Crossroads, in the midst of the WTO dispute settlement crisis. Professor Joost Pauwelyn opened the lively debate, providing several possible scenarios post-10th December, to set the stage.

Professor Gabrielle Marceau moderated the discussion, among two distinguished speakers from Akin Gump, Mr Clete Willems, and Mr Alan Yanovich, Mrs Gitanjali Brandon from the Indian Mission and at least 120 audience members.

The United States' position on WTO and Dispute Settlement reforms and possible solutions to the crisis were at the center of the discussion. The panel agreed on several factors contributing to the current situation and the immediate need to save the system, while some disagreements on how to best reform the system still persist.

Overall, given the looming crisis, the discussion ended on a positive note that as it stands, member countries are more willing to convene and open to different solutions than before.
