Donald Trump’s campaign resorted to a familiar populist strategy, placing the blame for inflation on the naïve Democratic elite and immigrant free riders. He promised that, once elected, egg prices would decrease, and immigrant criminals would be deported. As in 2016, White Evangelicals played a crucial role in Trump’s electoral success. However, a few months into his presidency, as ICE rounds up immigrants and egg prices continue to rise, White Evangelicals find themselves perplexed. While they were pivotal to Trump’s victory in 2025, they are no longer the sole representatives of MAGA religious populism. Postliberal Catholics, along with Pentecostal charismatics, January 6th conspiracy theorists, survivalists, and far-right converts from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), are now also vying for a seat at the table. This talk will explore key shifts and divisions within the current MAGA movement. It will address two central questions: Could this diversification in U.S. religious populism ironically lead to a decline in both Christianism and populism? And might it open new pathways for progressive, faith-based movements?
