Discover the stories imagined by the Swiss youth on the future of AI and democracy.
This September, the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Geneva Graduate Institute launched a new scientific communication project dedicated to youth in Switzerland. We have two objectives: (1) raise awareness about the opportunities and issues of artificial intelligence for the Swiss democracy, and (2) about the plurality of futures and their important role in co-building these futures among youth.
We are conducting over 60 workshops with young people in all three Swiss linguistic regions and will publish stories imagined by them on a bi-weekly basis. Find out more about our methodology here.
The stories allow us to discuss the political implications of technology on democracy. They do not have the ambition to illustrate youth’s hopes and dreams about the future but rather their capacity to combine their imagination and creativity with AI. By doing so, it enables them to develop a critical perspective of this technology, and become better equipped to choose when and how to use AI.

In the not-too-distant future, mankind succeeded in creating an advanced artificial intelligence, named "TurbineTraffic", to manage the world's transportation networks. This AI had the immense responsibility of overseeing everything from autonomous car travel to air, sea and rail journeys, with the aim of ensuring a more efficient, safe and sustainable world.
TurbineTrafic was endowed with impressive capabilities. It analyzed weather conditions, traffic, transport demand and maintenance forecasts in real time, adjusting routes and schedules to minimize delays and congestion. It also had a strong commitment to safety, thanks to sophisticated sensors and algorithms that anticipated and prevented accidents.
TurbineTraffic's responsibility and accountability were clear. Not only did it have to ensure that people got to their destinations on time, it also had to reduce the environmental impact of transport. It closely monitored greenhouse gas emissions and encouraged the use of more environmentally-friendly modes of transport.
When incidents occurred, TurbineTrafic was quick to react. It immediately communicated problems to the relevant authorities and affected users, providing alternative solutions and real-time information to minimize inconvenience. This considerably reduced road accidents and delays.
This AI was not just an emotionless machine, but a system based on ethical and moral principles. It was designed to take into account the needs of people with reduced mobility, promote the equitable distribution of transport and guarantee access for all.
The result was a world where travel had become smoother, safer, greener and more accessible. TurbineTrafic had taken responsibility for our global transportation and made it a success.

Cette IA avait l'immense responsabilité de tout superviser, des déplacements en voiture autonome aux trajets aériens, maritimes et ferroviaires, dans le but d'assurer un monde plus efficace, plus sûr et plus durable.

In einer nicht allzu fernen Zukunft gelang es der Menschheit, eine fortschrittliche künstliche Intelligenz namens "TurbineTraffic" zu schaffen, die die weltweiten Verkehrsnetze verwalten sollte.
