Academic Governance

The decision-making bodies of the Institute consist of:

  • The Direction of Studies (Director of Studies, Academic Adviser)
  • The Academic Committee (Director, Director of Studies, Director of Executive Education, Director of Research, heads of departments and interdisciplinary programmes)
  • The College of Professors (all professors of the Institute)
  • The College of Teachers (all professors and lecturers of the Institute).

The academic reforms or decisions are carried out by the Director of Studies and the Direction, which submit them to the Academic Committee and to the College of Professors and College of Teachers. The Director of Studies handles all matters and issues from the time of admission through to the successful completion of the degree.

Academic policies and regulations

The academic policy of the Institute is defined in the study regulations and internal guidelines of each programme.

Language Policy of the Institute

The official working languages of the Institute are English and French. All students are expected to have a working knowledge of English and, at least, a passive knowledge of French.

Students and professors may choose to express themselves, written or orally, in either language.

Guidance on Appeal procedure

A student may appeal against any academic decision he or she considers unreasonable or unfair. Opposition proceedings must follow the procedures laid down by Regulations Relating to the Appeal Procedure, or RIO. After proper notification of the Directorate of the Institute, the opposition is examined by the Opposition Board (Director of Studies, professors) who delivers a notice to the Director's attention. If the original decision is confirmed, the student has the opportunity to appeal their claim to the administrative court.

Teaching Evaluations

A few weeks prior to the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to evaluate the courses they have taken using questionnaires sent by email. The objective of this survey is to provide faculty members with feedback on their courses, including strengths or areas where there is room for improvement. The academic authorities consider these evaluations when faculty contracts are renewed.

Fieldwork Guidelines/Procedures

As a major tool of social science research, fieldwork can cover a wide range of data gathering activities with various implications, such as conducting interviews, informal observation or archival research. It may take place abroad in a very different social and political context or in the researcher’s own household. Fieldwork studies may last a few weeks or more than a year.
